The Rural Development Institute State of the Basin reports on four pillars environment, economy, culture, and society. Drawing on federal, provincial, regional, and local resources, RDI compiles a comprehensive look at communities in the Basin (Columbia-Basin-Boundary Region). I spent an afternoon reading this document. I found Fernie often at the top or bottom of scales. It rarely shows up in the middle. The report points to how our success as a community is also the cause of our biggest challenges. In the end, we see that Fernie has a great foundation on which to build.

It happens to all of us, we have grand plans to do a renovation, re-merchandise the shop, start a business blog or whatever new and exciting thing you’ve waited until the New Year’s to declare.  Then obstacles get in the way and our goals get caste aside in pursuit of the “more important” things that have fallen into our laps. We struggle to gather the strength and effort of making time for our goals and before you know it’s time for another New Year’s declaration.

So how do we overcome our obstacles and put our goals back on the top shelf?

Recently at the Chamber, we were targeted in a Spear Phishing attempt. This attempt had us replying to emails and confused. The mail looked like it was coming from a co-worker, but when we looked closer, the email was not a chamber email. We contacted our friends at Isosceles Business Systems to understand what was happening and that is where we learned about Spear Phishing. The grown-up more sophisticated version of Phising.

If your business is incorporated, then you could be facing a larger tax bill and big compliance costs from the government’s new proposals to change the way corporations are taxed.

Here are three things you need to know about the tax changes proposed by the federal government:

1.    Do you employ family members? The government wants to scrutinize their compensation to apply a much higher tax rate on income they consider “unreasonable”.
