Technology has made it is easy to be connected 24/7. Combine this with increasing workplace demands and a constant push to do more with less results in a work centric life. Our connected world means worktime can easily creep into home time. Hours become longer, work day start and ends become blurred, the demand for constant accessibility weighs on one’s time.

The Fernie Chamber of Commerce is a not-for-profit organization. This does not mean that we spend without regard for revenues or profits. As a business association, the Chamber board mandates that we follow financially sustainable business practices. We do not spend more than we have. Further, our spending is focused on our mission. Our offered programming and education courses are the results of a thoughtful process on what our members need.

What business activities are taking up the most of your time? Are these activities making your company money? Are you defining your to-do list with what needs to be done, or what you want to do? What is your goal for this quarter, for this year? This question will often bring up more than one urgent task. But the most successful businesses will go through the next step which is deciding who on your team is best suited to accomplish these tasks. Great leader will assess the list, identify the ones he or she is best suited to tackle and delegate the others.

Some people are keen to meet celebrities. I enjoy meeting politicians, and regardless of their political party. I appreciate the people who commit to spending their time serving an often angry and critical public. In my role as executive director, I have had dinner with our Member of Parliament Wayne Stetski, I have met Christy Clark, twice. I have been in meetings where Bill Bennett has spoken about his early days of running a fishing lodge. And, every two weeks I attend our City Council meetings, and get a chance to chat with our Mayor and City Councilors.

This month, the Chamber is focusing on communication and public relations. These two vital components of advertising a business, are at the core of what keeps your customers coming back.
In order to give you a real life example of how communications and public relations can help your business, we asked Fernie Brewing Company some questions. As the favourite brew of the Elk Valley and beyond, Fernie Brewing is obviously doing something right. Keep reading to see how they mingle with their people.

Marketing, advertising, sales, and public relations – there are so many different tactics you can use to communicate your product or service to your customers. Perhaps Public Relations, often referred to as PR, is the least understood and least utilized communication tool for businesses. Maybe you have heard about PR departments in large corporations but never thought about how it could be used in your small business.
To help us better understand PR as a communication tool we asked Christina Pilarski of CIPR Communications a few questions.
