Some people are keen to meet celebrities. I enjoy meeting politicians, and regardless of their political party. I appreciate the people who commit to spending their time serving an often angry and critical public. In my role as executive director, I have had dinner with our Member of Parliament Wayne Stetski, I have met Christy Clark, twice. I have been in meetings where Bill Bennett has spoken about his early days of running a fishing lodge. And, every two weeks I attend our City Council meetings, and get a chance to chat with our Mayor and City Councilors.

This month, the Chamber is focusing on communication and public relations. These two vital components of advertising a business, are at the core of what keeps your customers coming back.
In order to give you a real life example of how communications and public relations can help your business, we asked Fernie Brewing Company some questions. As the favourite brew of the Elk Valley and beyond, Fernie Brewing is obviously doing something right. Keep reading to see how they mingle with their people.

Marketing, advertising, sales, and public relations – there are so many different tactics you can use to communicate your product or service to your customers. Perhaps Public Relations, often referred to as PR, is the least understood and least utilized communication tool for businesses. Maybe you have heard about PR departments in large corporations but never thought about how it could be used in your small business.
To help us better understand PR as a communication tool we asked Christina Pilarski of CIPR Communications a few questions.

January is a month based around making and fulfilling goals, allowing individuals to imagine their best self. This month’s feature business has done exactly that. After opening in 2011, this Fernie favourite instantly became a household name all over the Elk Valley.

I love January. Everyone is so hopeful and excited for the New Year. The gym is full of people who have made resolutions to get healthy this year. We have been exposed to enough family time to make us appreciate work again. And we get to focus on the year as a clean slate. It is a great time to set goals. So here is our list of 5 goals to set for 2017.

I attend many City Council meetings and Committee of the Whole meetings. At one July meeting the discussion turned to 2nd Avenue closures and is it good or bad for business when the street is closed. The Chamber posed the question to businesses and the following is what we learned.

Resort communities across the province are reacting to sharing economy short-term rentals, and the topic was on the agenda for Fernie’s Committee of the Whole meeting on July 11, 2016. Fernie Chamber of Commerce executive director Patty Vadnais presented to City Council the number of short-term rentals in Fernie advertised through online websites such as Airbnb, VRBO, Owner Direct, Fernie Central Reservations and Fernie Lodging Company.
