Business Situation in Fernie
Today's Situation
Fernie's economic and
business situation is undergoing quite a transition. At present the
primary economic base lies within the resource extraction industries
(primarily mining).
About 50% of the
population base in Fernie is tied to these industries, however the
community's economic dependency is much higher as there is an
industrial tax sharing agreement in place.
The remaining business base is in tourism (accommodation, restaurants,
etc.), community services (financial, legal, government, health,
repair, entertainment, etc.), retail services and construction trades.
There are also a growing
number of "non store-front" businesses including consultants and other
home base enterprises that do not require a specific location to
operate. Over the past few decades, many new amenities have been
provided due to a steady growth in tourism. As a result, the city
certainly doesn't fit the traditional 'mining community' perception.

Future Focus
We are growing at an
impressive rate. Much of the growth is a direct result of the region's
increasing popularity as a recreational destination. Marketing efforts
are increasing the numbers of visitors to Fernie, and once here, people
are realizing the desirable amenities and lifestyle and are investing
in the community, either as a recreational property owner or as a new
resident. This growth initially sets the stage for business
opportunities in our tourism industry, but the potential is much
greater. Because of the desirable lifestyle, entrepreneurs that can
operate at a distance from their customers (light manufacturing,
technology, trainers, consultants, etc.) are finding Fernie to be the
ideal place for business and living. We often tell people "if you don't
have to be in the middle of the city, why should you?"
