About the Awards. Online nominations were received from August 17 to September 18. This resulted in 125 submissions representing 60 different businesses, organizations, and individuals. Those nominees were contacted and asked to submit a business bio and statement of nomination.  That information was then sent to a judging panel of six people from in and outside of Fernie including a retired oil executive, controller, small business owners, human resource executive, and a magazine publisher. Based on the submissions the panel ranked the nominees. The top three or four were identified in finalists; four being selected when the rankings were too close to call. The top-ranked finalist then was selected as the award winner. The one exception to this was the People's Choice award. All nominees were entered in the People's Choice and online voting took place from October 10 to October 19 and saw 345 votes.
