The Fernie Ambassador Program started in fall 2015 led by the Fernie Chamber of Commerce and College of the Rockies. Since its inception, the course has trained 506 ambassadors and is entering its fourth year. The Ambassador Program gives residents the skills and tools to provide an exceptional guest experience. This includes the who, what, where, when of Fernie and customer service tips.

2018 also saw the first Not-for-Kids Registration Fair. This event was hosted in partnership with Fernie Heritage Library. 24 local groups saw over 400 attendees at the registration fair. “The Ambassador Program seeks to connect new residents to the community quickly and the Not-For-Kids Registration Fair proposed by the Library was a perfect fit,” says Patty Vadnais, Fernie Chamber of Commerce executive director.

In fall 2018, the Ambassador Program hosted high school students. Career classes from Fernie Secondary School attended the program. This has been a great opportunity to engage local youth and introduce them to customer service skills.

There have been 39 courses and four more are planned for early 2019. The Ambassador Program was created by a task force of local businesses wanting to improve service levels. The task force reached out to the College of the Rockies to develop the training. “Working with College of the Rockies is key to the program’s success,” says Vadnais. “And, it helps that Christine Grimble, the course facilitator, is a true Fernieite who speaks from firsthand experience about cross-country skiing, back country exploring, biking, hiking and all that Fernie has to offer.” Anyone looking to learn more about Fernie and improve their customer service skills is invited to attend the course.

2019 scheduled courses are January 24, February 12, March 6, and April 25. Visit fernieambassador.ca for more details. The Fernie Chamber of Commerce recognizes provincial support for the Ambassador Program through the Resort Municipality Initiative.
